Ohio University Dance

A Meeting Place

If you're an OU SOD dancer and you have any questions that you'd like a student answer for - an answer that reflects experience, and the kind of unbiased truth that distance brings after graduation - post them here. Let Alums from all over the country answer your questions.

Cheers!

Here's an example question:

So, I'm enrolled in Dance 111 (music for dance) and I just wanted to know if it will ever come in useful after you graduate.

answer: yes. when you get to more advanced levels of choreographic study in undergrad, grad or beyond, having taken some music will help you communicate with a musician if you'd like live accompaniment, a commissioned score, or even if you just want to better understand the rudiments of music for the purpose of setting it to a dance. It's a small thing, but a musician will appreciate it if you can talk their talk (and any other thing you can do to show them that their not god's gift to women). And your understanding of music will show in how you choreograph to it. Its quite transparent when someone has never given it much thought. You don't want to be that person.
